My mom (47F) and stepdad (50M) are angry that I (18M) changed my last name back to my dad's and they keep demanding we sit down and talk about it again?

My mom and stepdad got married when I (18M) was 7 and changed my last name from my late dad's name to my stepdad's name. They wanted us to all have the same family last name. My stepdad wanted his name to be used and mom was planning to take his so without my consent they changed mine. They didn't technically need my consent but they expected me to be happy about it. For years it made me sad, then angry, that they changed my last name like that when dad was gone and I was his only kid. It was argued over the years that I was their only kid too and we were the living family who deserved to share a family name. I turned 18 in October and I had my name officially changed in April. By then I was living somewhere else and did not have to listen to my mom and stepdad complain every day. But we did sit down and talk three or four times already and each time they told me I had shown a disgusting lack of respect for my stepdad, the man who stepped up and raised me and lovingly gave me his name and tried to show me I was his son. They said I was underhanded doing it without telling them first. Even though I had talked about it for two whole years beforehand. But their reaction those times made me keep it quiet until the process when finished once I started it. They said it was really cruel of me to drop it completely and I turned it back around on them and said it was cruel to drop my dad's name completely. Then it turned into a fight of who my dad really is. For me my dad is always my late dad and my stepdad was never close to being the same to me. Now they're demanding we talk again but they're still pissed off and hostile so I'm not sure if I should or if we need like a real break from each other to see if they calm down. So I figured advice would be a good start to figuring this shit out. submitted by /u/ThrowRANamNoName to r/relationship_advice [link] [comments]
